How the phone line actually works.

Short version: you keep answering your own phone. FirstRing only picks up the calls you'd have missed anyway.

Questions

The phone number, explained

I want to keep my own number on my website. How does the AI still answer calls?

Two numbers exist, but only one is ever public. Your real number stays exactly where it is — on your website, your Google listing, your truck, everywhere. A separate FirstRing number is set up behind the scenes; nobody ever sees it or dials it directly. Your phone is set to forward to that hidden number only when you're busy or don't pick up within about 20 seconds — a one-time setting on your own phone (a short code from your carrier: Verizon *71, AT&T *61, T-Mobile **61*, varies by carrier). We walk you through it at signup; it takes under a minute.

So what does a caller actually experience?

They dial your real number, same as always. It rings your phone. If you answer, that's it — FirstRing never even knows the call happened. If you don't answer, your carrier automatically forwards it to the hidden FirstRing number, and the AI picks up using your business's name, books the job or takes a message, and texts you a summary right after. The caller never knows a second number was involved — to them, they called one number the whole time.

Do I have to give up my number, or buy new hardware?

No to both. Nothing about your existing number or phone changes. There's no app to install and no new equipment — call forwarding is a setting your carrier already offers, turned on once and left alone.

What if I don't want to answer calls at all?

That's the other option: the FirstRing number becomes the one that's public instead of your own, and the AI answers every call, not just the missed ones. Most owners start with their own number as the public one and switch later if they want to step back further.

Does this work with Google Local Services Ads (Google Guaranteed)?

LSA needs its own trackable number, so a Google Guaranteed Setup uses the second option above — the FirstRing number answers every LSA lead directly, so a missed call never turns into a lead you paid Google for but never got to answer.

Does forwarding cost anything extra?

Usually not — most modern phone plans include call forwarding at no extra charge. A small number of older or pay-per-minute plans bill a per-minute rate for forwarded calls; worth a quick check with your carrier if you're not sure what plan you're on.
